People Were Eating from the Trash Next to the Red Carpet

Exclusive: Last Sunday afternoon, two people were spotted searching for food in the trash cans along Hollywood Boulevard, right next to the Kodak Theater. That same Sunday afternoon, the 81st Academy Awards Ceremony was taking place. On the red carpet just a few feet away, the rich and famous were wearing clothes and jewelry whose worth could easily feed all the homeless people of Los Angeles. The vast gap between rich and poor is nothing new, but each year it grows bigger and bigger, together with the number of homeless people. City officials estimate that in 2009 the number of homeless within Los Angeles county may reach 100,000 people–a population larger than most cities in America. The charitable organizations that help the homeless have been hard hit by the current economy and the city itself does not seem to donate adequate time or resources to fighting the problem.
