“Safety Net” to be Honored in San Francisco

The short films, by M.F.A. candidates are on display as part of the “Immediate Future” exhibition at the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery. The juried exhibition showcases recipients of the 2009 Murphy and Cadogan Fellowships in the Fine Arts, providing a focused glimpse at what is being produced by promising artists in Bay Area graduate programs.

Eirini Steirou’s “Safety Net” is featured in “Immediate Future.” Eirini came to the US from the island of Chios to study in the Cinema Department of San Francisco State University. “Safety Net” is a psychological drama about dependability and trust that inter cuts between the lives of a married couple and a man faced with an extreme financial burden. The film examines their reactions in the face of betrayal and injustice, which set them on a collision course for disaster. The film has received more awards and honors, such as the best short film award from the Snohomish Carnegie International Film Festival in Seattle.

The Murphy and Cadogan Fellowships in the Fine Arts are annual awards sponsored by The San Francisco Foundation to assist students in funding their final year of graduate studies. In partnership with the foundation, the Arts Commission Gallery is committed to supporting works by outstanding Bay Area art students through the annual fellowship exhibition.

The exhibition is on display through Dec. 12.  Admission is free. For more info go to www.sfartscommission.org .
