Kosta Poulos Talks About Making it in Hollywood and His New Movie

Kosta grew up with a dream to become an actor in Hollywood. Years later when he came to the Film Mecca he realized that dreams always are a little different than reality. Having to work hard in many different jobs and being patient finally started paying off when he began to receive callbacks from auditions. Today he has done one of his best feature films yet as he tells us in this exclusive interview.

When did you come to LA?

I moved to LA in March of 2007..

What part of Greece does your family come from?

My father is from the village of Karyes near Sparti, and my mother is from Peristeri, Athens

How hard is it for new actors to make it in LA?

I believe it to be very difficult, but by no means impossible. People get sidetracked when they first move to LA, and end up losing much of the discipline that acting requires. It’s simple, but not an easy task. It’s hard to tell someone sit and study for hours, spend half your paycheck from your restaurant job on acting classes, and spend half of the money you don’t have on head shots without knowing what the future holds… and we’re talking “tomorrow” future, not a year from now..

What was your best experience?
The best experience I’ve ever had in LA professionally ended up recently taking me to Atlanta to shoot a film. One of the most enjoyable scripts I have ever read, and at the same time some of the best people I have ever worked with. Personally though, walking through Venice beach in the late afternoon sipping on ouzo from my coffee mug had made for some good experiences as well.

Worst Experience?
I was working a seasonal job, and when the season ended I found myself in a tough spot. Rent needed to be paid, utilities, food, etc.. and I was scrounging for pennies just so I could buy a Venti coffee from Starbucks and split it with my poor homie… That coffee was all I cared about at that moment..

Tell us about the new movie you shot in Atlanta?
The movie is called “Four Fifteen.” It’s an art film about three friends and their experiences as life carries them toward the future. All three characters are very different, but mesh together so well. The chemistry between me and the other characters was obvious, and translated very well on camera.
What is your role?
I play the role of Brian, my father’s dream son and my ex’s dream husband. He’s a Wall Street type, financially independent, fun-loving guy. He tries to persuade his friend to join forces in his business ventures because he realizes he can’t do it alone. Throughout the film you see him strong and stoic, but deep down inside he’s losing control of himself, his business, and his friend. A bit of a womanizer as well.. but I have no idea what that’s like.

You have worked in Greece as well as in the US. How could you compare Hollywood vs. Greece from an actor’s perspective?

I have worked in Greece as well, but I didn’t wait around for a career to blossom (or for my slight accent to disappear). If you compare Hollywood vs. Greece from “an actor’s perspective”, one could say the craft services in Greece suck. No, but really in Greece they’re productions get showcased in a country the size of maybe the state of Georgia. There’s no room for huge budgets or amazing cameras. They’d never make their money back. But the actor’s in Greece can enjoy one thing most of Hollywood won’t get to enjoy, and that thing is the real potential to have a career. It’s much easier to work in Greece, (that is if you speak the language fluently, and accent-less). The pay is less, but it’ll keep you from scrounging for pennies to purchase that Venti Coffee.
