Greece’s first ever full-time import to the USA, a band that in just a few months ignited and spearheaded an entirely new punk movement on the once wild streets of Los Angeles, is the fire-like phenomenon known as Barb Wire Dolls. The girl-fronted street-rock punk band compared to a cross between Blondie and Sex Pistols and described as “a girl-fronted Green Day” by old school punk legends Bouncing Souls, are bringing back the glory days of the legendary Sunset Strip and made their own history by being the first rock band from Greece to play in America in December 2010 at their sold out show at the Roxy Theatre. “Discovered” and played non-stop for months on the world famous KROQ by legendary taste-maker Rodney Bingenheimer on his Rodney On The Roq radio show while still living in an artist commune on the island of Crete, the band sold all and relocated to the bright city lights of Los Angeles to live their dream.
Bored with the softer-edged Indie scene and with an uncompromising military-like agenda, the young wild blond bombshell Queen Isis on vocals, ex-pro surfer/skater Greek cult icon Tas Doll on guitar, garage legend Voodoo Doll on bass and animalistic Greek god Greg Doll on drums, the band stormed Los Angeles with a passion and fervor not seen in decades as if going into battle with a full frontal attack to seize a new territory . Revamping and bringing back the classic L.A. punk scene to the media and masses, their authentic attitude of DIY, band unity, and inner revolution built them an exponential word of mouth buzz being heralded as “The Next Big Thing” by the press and caught them the attention of the record industry receiving their first record deal offer after only three months. “You can tell that something huge is about to happen. The next Nirvana, the next punk-type band is happening right now, bubbling up from the underground” – explains Queen Isis when asked about the state of the music industry. Barb Wire Dolls self-released their debut EP “Punk The Fussies!” (2010) that was recorded in Greece for under $500 in one night ‘live and in one take’ and the singles “Street Generation” and “California” charted on commercial radio stations around the world and both songs were placed in major soundtrack Surf videos. Their harder-edged follow-up full-length album “The Masturbator” will be released once the band chooses which record label to sign with. Recorded in Los Angeles in the same DIY-punk ethic manner but this time in a world class studio with a big time producer, thirteen songs were recorded at Tranzformer Studios with the legendary Bryan Carlstrom (Offspring, Alice In Chains, Social Distortion, PIL) who has carved out his own niche in the music scene with over 20 years partnering with Dave Jerden (Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction) and making loud guitar driven records that have sold over 50 million albums world-wide. “If you wanna get your rocks off, you gotta do it yourself” explains Queen Isis about the albums’ controversial and provocative title.
With the Masturbator’s first bombastic single ‘I Wanna Know’ already hitting airwaves like a nuclear bomb with its radio-friendly pop explosion, urgent lyrics, and Nirvana-esque hooks, the band’s new intense possibilities are an open road. The new single was released on Rapture, Saturday May 21, debuting on Rebel Radio in Los Angeles with one comment from the band, “Rap is dead”. In recent times it has seemed that popular rock music has lost a bit of its attitude, bands seem a bit soft, carefully treading along a musical path whereas Barb Wire Dolls have seem to tear the path apart, going against the grain, going against what is “Now”, creating a new blueprint for the future of rock in the mainstream.
