Greek-American Director Alexander Payne Joins Cannes Jury

Director Alexander Payne, of Greek origin, was named to jury in the 65th Cannes Film Festival. Payne was nominated for three Oscars this past year. In 2011, he won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for his movie ‘The Descendants,” starring George Clooney.

Actor Ewan McGregor and director Alexander Payne were among those recently selected to be members of the Cannes Film Festival jury. Others announced by the festival’s organizers were actress Diane Kruger, director Andrea Arnold and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

The group will also include Palestinian director Hiam Abbass, French actress Emmanuelle Devos and Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck.

The jurors will award the prestigious Palme d’Or to one film. Director Nanni Moretti, who won the award for his film ‘The Son’s Room” in 2011, will be president of the jury.

Alexander Payne has the difficult task to decide which movie, out of 23, is better than his and would deserve the prestigious prize.

The 65th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled from May 16 through May 27 in the resort town on the French Riviera. The lineup will include “Cosmopolis,” directed by David Cronenberg and “On the Road” from Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles. Michael Haneke’s “Amour” and Ken Loach’s “The Angel’s Share” are among this year’s participants.
