In a rush to beat MGM and Paramount’s release of “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” in August 2014, Millennium has begun moving forward on their $70 million film about the Greek hero with hopes of having it in theaters by March 2014.

Director Renny Harlin (“The Long Kiss Goodnight,” “Die Hard 2”) has just signed on to helm “Hercules 3D” for Millennium, and the lead will be cast sometime in the next few weeks. The film is expected to be less fantasy, more “Gladiator,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In an interview with the publication, Harlin made note of the competition, saying “Ancient Greek mythology is an endless source of good stories … Let’s see both movies be successful.”

Millennium has had their “Hercules” project in the works since 2007. Sean Hood and Hanna Weg are penning the script.

MGM and Paramount’s version stars Dwayne Johnson and is being directed by Brett Ratner (“Rush Hour,” “X-Men: The Last Stand”).
