Los Angeles Greeks Celebrate Independence Day

Greek Independence day Los Angeles

Consul general of Greece in Los Angeles, Elisabeth Fotiadou, held a reception at her residence to celebrate Greek Independence Day on March 25th, 2013.

Actor Billy Zane, singer Ariana Savalas, TV presenter Patricia Kara and singer/songwriter Vassy, together with other entertainment industry key players of Greek descent gathered at the residence of Consul General of Greece to celebrate the anniversary of Greek Independence day.

The night included Greek food based on a Byzantine menu to celebrate the upcoming 2014 ‘Heaven and Earth’ art exhibit from Greek collections at the national gallery in Washington DC and the Getty Villa  in Los Angeles.

Greek Independence Day is commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821. It coincides with the Greek Orthodox Church’s celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God.

The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25, 1821, when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese.
