A documentary is bringing awareness to a Greek immigrant’s struggle to keep his business thriving in New York City.

The Paper House Report” centers on Jerry Delakas, a Greek immigrant who came to the United States in the 1970s. Over the years, Delakas has become a staple in the Cooper Square area of New York City with his Astor Place Newsstand, which he has been running for the past 26 years. The 25-minute film from Nicole Cimino and Jack Boar Pictures tells the story of his fight to continue running the newsstand after the Department of Consumer Affairs denied the renewal of the license.

The film also documents the details behind the DCA’s decision, which ultimately led to the lock up of the 64-year-old’s business this past December with signs stating that he’s illegally operating it. Ever since its shutdown, the Newsstand has been attracting a crowd of locals who support Delakas.

Facebook pages have even been set up, including “Jerry’s Newsstand” and “Save Jerry’s Newsstand,” that provide updates on the status of the business. One of the pages has arranged for a donation site so people can help keep Delakas’ American dream alive.

With the backing of residents in the area, the case to re-open Jerry’s Newsstand has now been taken to recently appointed New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, and a decision will hopefully be made soon in Delakas’ favor.
