Zach Galifianakis to Star in Gay Rights Feature ‘Freeheld’

The campaign premiere Zach Galifianakis

Zach Galifianakis has signed on to join Julianne Moore and Ellen Page in the feature film “Freeheld,” based on the documentary of the same name.

The 2007 documentary from director Cynthia Wade centered on New Jersey car mechanic Stacie Andree and her police detective girlfriend Laurel Hester, who both battled to secure Hester’s pension benefits after she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. The film won an Oscar in 2008 for Best Documentary, Short Subjects.

In the feature version, Galifianakis will play Steven Goldstein, the New Jersey gay rights activist who notably founded Garden State Equality in 2004 to fight for the equal rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The upcoming film is being directed by Peter Sollett (“Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist”), with a screenplay by Ryan Nyswaner, an Oscar nominee for his writing on the film “Philadelphia,” starring Tom Hanks.

“Freeheld” is still currently in pre-production, and there is no word yet on a release date.
