Film director Nick Cassavetes is trying something new: he’s set to direct the the first episode of the ABC television series “Astronaut Wives Club.”

According to an exclusive from Deadline, the Greek-American will get behind the camera for the first in a 10-episode series. The drama, set in the ’60s, centers on the real-life story of women who stood by some of the biggest heroes in American history during the height of the space race.  JoAnna Garcia has been named as the first wife cast in the series.

Cassavetes, best known for his work as a director on films like “The Notebook,” “Alpha Dog,” and “She’s So Lovely,” recently helmed the comedy “The Other Woman.” He is making his television directing debut with the ABC series.

“Astronaut Wives Club” has been picked up with a straight-to-series order, meaning a test-run pilot episode won’t be necessary, and is scheduled to air in the summer.
