Restoration Ahead for Anthony Quinn ‘Zorba the Greek’-Inspired Mural

quinnA famous mural in Los Angeles featuring actor Anthony Quinn is getting a $150,000 makeover.

Better known as “The Pope of Broadway,” the 70-foot mural painted in 1985 by artist Eloy Torrez, was inspired by the actor’s 1964 role in “Zorba the Greek.” With his arms stretched out – similar to the scene where he famously dances at the end of the film – Quinn overlooks the downtown area of LA.

Actor Edward James Olmos and city officials announced the move to restore the landmark mural on Wednesday. Councilmember Jose Huizar, who helped gather funding for the project, also took part in the announcement.

The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles will lead the way for the restoration.

Quinn, who was born in Mexico and raised in East LA, began his acting career as a performer at the Million Dollar Theatre near where the mural is located on Third Street and Broadway.

He later went on to star in critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including “La Strada,” “The Guns of Navarone,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Guns for San Sebastian,” “The Message and Lion of the Desert,” and of course, one of his most famous roles came in “Zorba the Greek,” which garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He won Best Supporting Actor Oscars for his roles in “Viva Zapata!” in 1952 and “Lust for Life” in 1956. Quinn passed away in 2001 at the age of 86.
