Actress and former adult film star Sasha Grey (real name: Marina Ann Hantzis) has been the subject of a huge controversy in Russia’s involvement in the Ukrainian Crisis.
As part of a Russian propaganda campaign, a video was uploaded to social media site VKontakte featured Grey’s face, while a narrator told a story of a nurse being captured, tortured and killed by Ukrainian forces.
The video implied that Grey had been captured while she was working as a nurse under the name “Sasha Serova.”
Grey slammed the video and propaganda campaign on her Twitter account right away, stating “I <3 my Russian fans, but this propaganda takes it too far. News that I was a NURSE killed in the Russian/Ukraine conflict." She also tried to impress the tragedy of the current conflict upon her fans, reminding her audience that people are dying and losing family members in Ukraine and it is not right for websites to undermine the tragedy by releasing false and ridiculous stories. Grey is often quite politically outspoken and this is not the first time she has been mixed up in controversy due to her beliefs. She has previously called and campaigned for many causes, ranging from equal pay for women to peace in Ukraine.
In 2013, pro-Russian bloggers attacked her when she urged Ukraine to “stay strong.” Grey refuted the attacks by explaining she was simply in favor of peace and an end to the conflict.
She said “I have love & respect for all of my Russian & Ukrainian fans, I wish there was more I could do. #peace.”
