Lawsuit Claims Sophia Amoruso Fires Pregnant Employees

Sophia Amoruso, the famous #GIRLBOSS of Nasty Gal clothing stores, is under fire for the Los Angeles-based store’s alleged layoffs of pregnant women.

Though Amoruso has always championed workplace equality among men and women, a recent lawsuit claims that several employees were fired from the Nasty Gal store after they became pregnant or requested maternity or paternity leave.

The ex-employee that filed the suit, Aimee Concepcion, claims that she was fired in August 2014 just a few months after telling her manager she was pregnant, even though she had always had great workplace reviews.

Concepcion also names three other female co-workers fired for similar reasons, and one male co-worker fired after requesting paternity leave. All five employees were told that the firings were because of budgetary issues.

A spokesperson for the company stated that “The accusations made in the lawsuits are false, defamatory and taken completely out of context. The layoffs in question were part of a larger restructuring of departments we completed over nine months ago. The lawsuits are frivolous and without merit.”

However, employees have been complaining about Nasty Gal’s treatment of employees for a while, especially on the Glass Door site that allows employees to review their bosses and companies.

Sophia Amoruso will have to make a statement sooner or later about the fallout from the lawsuit and employee complaints, especially since she has built an image advocating an equal role for women in the workplace and female empowerment in the office.
