‘Nikos Kazantzakis’: Yannis Smaragdis Announces New Film

Greek director Yannis Smaragdis recently announced a new film centering on the life of Cretan poet, novelist and travel writer Nikos Kazantzakis.

Smaragdis is known for previous films such as “Kavafy”, “El Greco”, and “God Loves Caviar”, most of them centering on Greek themes and important personalities.

The plot of “Nikos Kazantzakis” will follow the writer’s travels and experiences throughout his long and varied career, which led him to a life philosophy encapsulated in his famous quote: “I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I am free.”

Kazantzakis became famous outside Greece due to his huge contributions to literature including Zorba the Greek, The Last Temptation of Christ and Christ Recrucified.

Smaragdis said about the concept of his film that, “we think it will highlight the large and attractive personality of Nikos Kazantzakis and the places he lived, loved and was fascinated by. The great Cretan writer said that what determined his life and work was ‘travelling and dreams’.”

“This is what we will seek to emerge through the film. His trips to France, Austria, Germany and China, and through them his philosophical and metaphysical pursuits, as well as the ‘inside’, the ‘inner journey’,” says Smaragdis.

The filming will take place starting April 2016 across five different countries to reflect the author’s travels: Greece (Crete, Athens, Aegina) France (Paris and Antipolis), Austria (Vienna), Germany (Berlin) and China.

So far, many actors have already been cast, including Odysseus Papaspiliopoulos as the New Kazantzakis, Marina Kalogerou as Eleni Kazantzakis, Theodore Atheridis as George Zorbas, and Zeta Duka as Melina Mercouri.
