Netflix Continues to Rise as Ted Sarandos Acquires Top Shows

Ted Sarandos

Netflix has expanded its empire at a rapid pace over the last few years under the guidance of Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, and now the streaming service has nabbed exclusive rights to CW’s “Jane the Virgin”, CBS’ “Zoo”, USA’s “Colony”, and ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder”.

Sarandos was happy with the acquisitions, commenting that the “shows are delightfully entertaining and will find a big audience across the more than 50 countries where Netflix is available.”

One of the shows, “Colony”, is not even on TV yet as it is scheduled to premiere on January 16 of next year.

This acquisition of hot new shows is part of Netflix’s plan to rapidly build up their content library over the coming year. Sarandos has budgeted more than $6 billion in 2016 alone on feature films, television series, documentaries, stand-up specials, and other quality content to ensure Netflix’s domination of the streaming industry.

Netflix spent $3.7 billion on content acquisition in 2014, so they have almost doubled their spending this year, which demonstrates their priority on nabbing exclusive rights to top quality content.

Though some still worry about the effect of Netflix on network television because of the service’s effect on TV ad revenue, Sarandos insists that there is nothing to worry about.

One thing is for sure: Netflix is at the top of its game right now, and shows no signs of slowing down in the entertainment industry.
