“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” was finally released today, years after the original movie starring Nia Vardalos became a surprise cult hit. The film premiered on March 25th, Greek Independence Day, drawing many Greek-Americans across the US to their nearest theaters after family dinners and celebrations. Though box office figures won’t be in for a while, the movie has already premiered across all major US cities and the reviews are in.

Though the feedback from critics is mixed, and in fact a little negative, audiences seemed to enjoy the Portokalos’ family second time on screen, as the movie has garnered an almost 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from audiences, even though it received a much lower grade from critics.

For the second movie, the entire Portokalos family is back, including leads Toula, played by Nia Vardalos, and her husband Ian, portrayed by John Corbett. It is also one of the first major film outings for young actress Elena Kampouris, who plays the couple’s teenage daughter.

The film focuses on another wedding in the family, but for those who haven’t seen it yet, we don’t want to give away too much of the plot.
