Ted Sarandos has been getting a lot of questions and scrutiny regarding Netflix’s strategy when it comes to original content, and he recently made his position clear: Netflix will not slow down at all when it comes to producing original content.
Sarandos answered questions regarding the streaming giant’s strategy at an executive Q&A session as part of the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills.
Original Netflix shows like “House of Cards”, “Orange is the New Black”, and exclusive movies like “Beasts of No Nation” have received critical acclaim and devoted followings. However, some shareholders and media outlets are worried that Netflix may spread itself out too much, and produce so much content that its shows will not successfully be able to find an audience.
Sarandos waved aside such fears, saying “If you’re keeping the shows great and people are loving them, why make less?”
Though the visionary head of the company agrees that “there are too many mediocre, safe shows on linear television”, Sarandos says that Netflix is different from most prime time TV and other cable channels, because Netflix takes “a lot of big swings”.
To produce additional original shows, Netflix will increase its current $6 billion content budget, though Sarandos has not yet mentioned an exact figure for the upcoming year.
