George Michael, the former singer of the 80s group Wham! has just died at age 53 in his home in Oxfordshire.
The singer was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London before changing his name to the more fame-friendly George Michael. After his success with Wham!, Michael continued to find success with his solo career, selling more than 100 million albums throughout the past forty years.
Medical personnel on the scene don’t know the cause of death yet, though they didn’t find anything suspicious in the singer’s home and say he seems to have died peacefully in his sleep.
The singer had some medical trouble in 2011 with an especially severe case of pneumonia, but he had long since overcome any such medical issues.
Michael’s publicist stated, “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”
