Michael Angelakos, the lead singer of alternative rock band Passion Pit and an outspoken advocate for mental health issues, has joined a new campaign for suicide prevention and mental health awareness called “I’m Listening”.

The campaign is an effort on behalf of the radio network Entercom to help those combatting mental health issues and will take place on September 10, which is World Suicide Prevention Day.

Entercom’s two hour special will feature several celebrity guests (mostly musicians), including Halsey, Jack Antonoff, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, and others, in addition to Angelakos.

Famous music producer Bob Ezrin, who worked with influential musical acts like Pink Floyd and Kiss, will also be participating, as he lost his oldest son to suicide years ago and has become an advocate for mental health awareness.

Awareness campaigns are especially important for mental health issues that are often misunderstood and sometimes stigmatized by society. As Ezrin himself stated, “Not talking openly and immediately about the cause and effect of suicide actually makes it more mysterious, and strangely glamorous-sounding.  We need to speak openly about these issues so that it becomes natural for people who are suffering to say so, and to reach out for help.”
