Netflix has a new series out called “Big Mouth” dealing with the struggles, the weirdness, and the downright disgusting phase of human life referred to as puberty. The animated series stars several comedy legends such as Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, and Maya Rudolph, and also includes the master of angry comedy, Jason Mantzoukas.
Even though the show’s humor might seem crude and gross at first, reviewers agree that the show has a lot of laughs and a lot of heart behind the jokes.
According to “Vox”, “If ‘Big Mouth’ were just a series of jokes about how weird and gross puberty is, it wouldn’t be much more than a decent way to kill some time during a slow weekend. But the show achieves a new, deeper level of comedy by remaining hyper aware of the fact that puberty isn’t just about bodies changing, but about what it means to grow up at all.”
The show focuses on shy Andrew (John Mulaney) and Jessi (Jessi Klein), who are just starting their journey into their teenage years, and are followed around respectively by personified ‘hormone monsters’ Maury (Nick Kroll) and Connie (Maya Rudolph).
Everything from crushes, hormones, changing dynamics in friendships as some kids grow up faster than others, and the uncontrollable mood swings and urges of the kids’ teenage years are examined; definitely a stage of life to which all viewers can relate.
Jason Mantzoukas plays the school hothead, named Jay, who gets into the most trouble of all the kids.
“Big Mouth” has ten episodes out on Netflix right now, so check it out if you have the service.
