Zach Galifianakis: ‘I Don’t Want to Play the Same Type of Characters’

Zach Galifianakis recently gave an interview to “Collider” magazine on his newest project, “A Wrinkle in Time”.

The movie is based on a popular children’s book by Madeleine L’Engle, and follows teenager Meg Murry on a fantastical journey. She meets a lot of intriguing characters on her way, one of whom is the Happy Medium, played by Zach Galifianakis.

Taking such a part is quite a departure for Galifianakis, who usually plays comedic, offbeat roles. He addressed this in his “Collider” interview, stating, “Well, I don’t want to do anything that is too familiar anymore. I don’t want to play the same type of characters. I’ve done that. When you can do it, they want to keep you in that box, and that box becomes real boring. My whole thing is that, when I get a script, I ask, “Is it a comedy?” If the answer is no, than I’ll read it.”

However, Galifianakis is not breaking completely with his comedic past. He has also confirmed that his FX series “Baskets” has been renewed for season four.

“A Wrinkle in Time” premieres on March 9 in theaters throughout the US. Directed by the acclaimed Ava DuVernay, the film also features Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Mindy Kaling.
