Two Greek-American artists, Kelly Clarkson and Alexandre Desplat, are nominated for the upcoming 2012 Grammy awards. The 2012 Grammys honor achievement in music for the preceding calendar year.

American Idol Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson, who has a Greek mother, is up for “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” for her collaboration with fellow country star Jason Aldean for their chart-topping duet “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” in a category that features musical works by duo Thompson Square for “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” The Civil Wars’ “Barton Hollow,” as well as Kenny Chesney’s duet with Grace Potter “You and Tequila.” Recently, Clarkson and Aldean won the prestigious Country Music Association (CMA) award for “Vocal Event of the Year” for their soaring duet, so their chances of winning a Grammy are relatively high.

In addition to Clarkson, Greek-French composer Alexandre Desplat is nominated twice for the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media” Grammy. His nominations are for his work on two film soundtracks “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” as well as “The King’s Speech.” He is up against such noteworthy composers as British musician Clint Mansell (“The Black Swan”), Ryan Shore (“The Shrine”), and electronic duo Daft Punk (“Tron Legacy”). Unless his two nominations cancel themselves out, Desplat is a serious contender at this year’s Grammy ceremony.

Tune in on February 12, 2012, to see if our Greek-American 2012 Grammy nominees will take home the coveted trophies. Best of luck to them!
