Olympia Dukakis Takes the Stage for ‘Elektra’

Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis is taking to the stage once again for the American Conservatory Theater’s presentation of the ancient Greek drama “Elektra.”

The 81 year-old actress appeared in theater adaptations of Sophocles’ work numerous times, though never played the title character. She’s played Elektra’s sister, Chrysothemis, as well as the mother, Clytemnestra. In this performance, she is taking on the role of the entire Chorus.

Dukakis has starred in many Hollywood films and television series, with a career that spans 50 years. She won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award in 1988 for playing Cher’s feisty mother in “Moonstruck.”

“Elektra” heads into previews this week at the American Conservatory Theater, 415 Geary Street in San Francisco, California. The play officially opens October 31 and runs through November 18. Tickets range from $25-$120. For more information, call 415-749-2228 or visit www.act-sf.org.
