Greek-Danish Director Talks Oscar Nomination; A Royal Affair

Greek-Danish director Nikolaj Arcel talks about his Oscar nomination for “A Royal Affair,” his Greek heritage, and what future projects he has in store.

Arcel has written nine films, four of which he directed. One of those films, “A Royal Affair,” about the Queen and royal physician’s romance in the 18th century during the rule of King Christian VII of Denmark, was nominated for a Golden Globe this year and is also up for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

“A Royal Affair” has opened theatrically in more than 70 countries. It won two Silver Bears at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival, and in addition to the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, it was also nominated for a Critic’s Choice award.

Arcel, whose father is from Denmark and mother from Mytiline, Greece graduated from film school in 2001. Besides directing, he is also an accomplished screenwriter, having penned the Swedish version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” as well as many other feature films. He is currently the only director with two films on the official Danish top ten box office list.
