Xan Cassavetes Directs Vampire Film ‘Kiss of the Damned’

dirThe first feature film from Xan Cassavetes, daughter of famed Greek-American filmmaker and actor John Cassavetes, hits theaters this week.

“Kiss of the Damned” had its debut at the SXSW Film Festival this past March, made its way to VOD, and just had its theatrical release on Friday, May 3. The plot centers on a beautiful vampire named Djuna who tries to resist the advances of handsome, human screenwriter Paolo. After submitting to their passion, her troublemaker sister unexpectedly pays a visit and threatens not only the love between Djuna and Paolo, but also the entire vampire community. Milo Ventimeglia, Anna Mouglalis, Josephine de La Baume and Roxane Mesquida star in the film.

Cassavetes’ nickname “Xan,” short for Alexandra, was given to her by her father. In a recent interview, she said he shortened her name because Alexandra reminded him of his once “mean babysitter (with the same name) who was Greek and had a deep-cut, old-school tattoo of a cross on her forehead, and thin lips.”

The 47-year-old actress/writer/director last appeared in “Alpha Dog,” a film directed by her brother, Nick. She previously got behind the camera for the television documentary, “Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession,” and the short film “Dust.” “Kiss of the Damned” marks her debut narrative feature as a writer/director.
