Google Chrome Does Zorba’s Dance

ZorbaGoogleA new commercial for Google Chromecast features the song “Zorbas,” which was composed by Mikis Theodorakis and featured in the 1964 film “Zorba the Greek,” starring Anthony Quinn.

In the ad, the song starts off as it typically does: slow. Then, as the one-minute commercial goes on, “Zorbas” speeds up, and people dance or engage in other activities, keeping up with the pace as the music plays along. The slogan for Google’s latest venture is “Chromecast: For Bigger Fun.”

Chromecast is a device that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port, powered by an included USB cable. Using your smartphone or computer as a remote control, it can be used to access video content from Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus and the Google Play Store. It can also be used to stream almost any kind of content from the Chrome browser on a computer.

“Zorbas” is well known in popular culture. Besides the Google commercial, the song has been featured many times in various other ways, including being used at Yankee Stadium for years to get the crowd going and rally the home team. The dance at the end of “Zorba the Greek,” which was choreographed by Giorgos Provias, is known as “Zorba’s Dance” or “Sirtaki.”
