Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Receives Industry Tribute at Gotham Awards

Ted Sarandos

Ted Sarandos, the Greek-American Chief Content Officer of Netflix, was honored today with an industry tribute at the prestigious 2014 Gotham Independent Film Awards. The Gotham Awards ceremony, which traditionally kicks off the Oscar season, took place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The Independent Filmmakers Project chose Sarandos because of his dedication to revolutionalize the way shows are produced and consumed through the Netflix business model. Joana Vicente, executive director of the Independent Filmmakers Project, commended Sarandos as “a visionary who is credited with reshaping how, when and where we watch entertainment.”

Sarandos’ strategy for Netflix over the past years included a push to create original content on the streaming service, which has since led to many critically and commercially successful shows such as “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.” The shows have received several Emmy nominations and played an important role in Netflix’s impressive growth in reach and popularity.

The evening’s other honorees included Tilda Swinton and Bennett Miller. Swinton was honored with the actor tribute for her impressive body of work this year, which included appearances in Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and Jim Jarmusch’s “Only Lovers Left Alive.” The director tribute went to Bennett Miller to honor him for his fantastic work helming the film “Foxcatcher.”

Sarandos has been in charge of Netflix’s content acquisition since 2000 and is frequently praised as one of the most innovative people working behind the scenes in Hollywood today.
