Zach Galifianakis Part of Huge Hollywood Industry Shakeup

Hollywood agencies made headlines this week when 11 agents decided to jump ship from CAA (Creative Artists’ Agency), the biggest and most prominent agency in Hollywood, to equally prestigious but slightly less powerful UTA (United Talent Agency).

The agents took a lot of A-listers with them to UTA, including Zach Galifianakis and comedy stars Will Ferrell and Chris Pratt. The total number of clients lost to UTA could total up to 150 when all is said and done.

The move was a complete surprise to CAA, who quickly went on the defensive and filed lawsuits against the agents and clients who left the agency. Many Hollywood insiders pointed out that CAA founders Mike Ovitz and Ron Meyer built the agency’s reputation on clients they poached from other agencies, so the most recent move could be considered just desserts for CAA’s history.

The problem Galifianakis’ agent and others had was mostly with CAA’s increasing corporate feel thanks in part to its takeover by private equity firm TPG Capital. They prefer UTA’s more boutique feel and stronger emphasis on the film industry, rather than the million directions CAA was branching out to.

Galifianakis, along with many other actors, was most likely unaware of the agent jump until the last minute, and had to make the choice to be one of the first A-listers to leave CAA behind him as well.

This is one of the largest power shifts in Hollywood in the last 50 years; the effect on Galifianakis’ career, along with the other actors in tow, and the kind of films they produce in the next decade, could be huge. Hollywood will just have to wait and see.
