After the first weekend of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” screenings at cinemas, box office reports show that the film is well on its way to making a tidy profit.
Even though it opened on an extremely difficult weekend, since it was released on the same day as “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice”, the film managed to rake in $18.5 million over Easter weekend, which roughly equals Universal Pictures’ production budget for the film.
That means that even though critics gave the film some negative reviews, audiences apparently were much happier with the movie, since a fair number of them turned out to see it. According to distribution chief for Universal Nick Carpou (coincidentally also Greek), “This movie was made for people. Everybody comes from a family, and that lets them relate to these terrific characters created by Nia.”
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” made another $8 million overseas, and will continue to play in theaters worldwide for several weeks.
