Did the Ancient Greeks Twerk? ‘Twerkumentary’ Says Yes

There’s a fun new documentary out, or rather, “Twerkumentary”, that says the phenomenon of twerking may have roots going back to the ancient Greeks.

Italian filmmaker Spaghetto, along with cinematographer Gianfilippo de Rossi, tries to trace the roots of twerking and follow the development of the dance across different countries, eras, and US cities. She discovered that as early as 423 BC, there was an ancient Greek dance called “Kordax” used mostly in comedies, which involved bending and shaking the hips much like modern-day twerking.

The current version of the dance was mostly brought back in southern urban US cities like New Orleans and Miami, and Spaghetto travels all over the US and the world interviewing major figures in the hip hop and dance scene such as Too Short, George Clinton, Remy Fox, Diplo and Kreayshawn, to further explore twerking’s appeal and origins.

A cool globetrotting look at how a dance phenomenon appears, takes hold and evolves, “Twerkumentary” takes you from New Orleans to London to Tokyo, and explores not only the dance itself, but the attitudes surrounding it as an expression of womens’ sexuality.
