During an official ceremony on August 18, the Oscar-winning director Alexander Payne became an honorary citizen of Aigio in the Peloponnese region.
The 54-year-old recently married Maria Kontos, a 27-year-old Greek woman that he met last spring as Payne was visiting Aigio, his birthplace.
The couple fell in love at first sight, according to media reports, leading Maria to leave her old life behind to begin a new adventure at her husband’s side.
