Tom Hanks has been selected to win the Icon Award from the prestigious Palm Springs Film Festival for his performance as Captain ‘Sully’ Sullenberger in the Clint Eastwood-directed film “Sully”.

This award will be presented at the annual Film Awards Gala of the festival, which is now in its 28th year. The Gala will take place on January 2 at Palm Springs Convention Center, and the festival will continue to run until January 16.

Festival Chairman Harold Matzner praised Hanks’ performance in the highest of terms, saying that “This is sure to be remembered in his long list of iconic character roles, including those in ‘Forrest Gump,’ ‘Captain Phillips,’ ‘Castaway,’ ‘Philadelphia,’ ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ the ‘Toy Story’ films and so many others.”

Many acclaimed actors have won the Icon Award in the past, including Meryl Streep and Michael Douglas. Hanks has already won back to back Academy Awards for his performances in “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump”, and was last nominated for an Oscar for “Castaway”, and for a Golden Globe for “Captain Phillips”.
