Ted Sarandos: ‘Netflix is the Home of Kickass Women’

Ted Sarandos

Last week, Ted Sarandos gave a speech at a panel discussion hosted by Visionary Women at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, stating that he believes Hollywood is moving towards greater diversity and Netflix is one of the companies at the helm of that change.

As Sarandos said more succinctly, “Netflix is the home of kickass women”.

The Netflix CEO went on to say that the streaming service has “filled [its] executive suites with women. It starts with female executives, who hire female story-tellers, who hire female directors.”

Popular Netflix shows like Jessica Jones have signed on all-female directors for the second season.

“We are working as hard as we can to make sure that television is diverse in front of and behind the camera,” said Sarandos.

Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer was also on hand to commend the rise of women in Hollywood, though both Sarandos and Grazer pointed out that a lot of progress still needed to be made towards true equality and diversity in the industry.

The lack of women behind the scenes of Hollywood productions, as well as the relatively limited number of complex characters and leading roles for women as compared to men has been a problem in Hollywood for decades. Forward-thinking companies like Netflix are making great moves to include more women behind the scenes and in shows, thus harnessing the true talent and potential of females all across Hollywood.
