2017 LA Greek Film Festival Lineup Announced!

Los Angeles Greek Film Festival

For those of you looking forward to the latest offerings in Greek-produced or directed independent cinema around the world, the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival has just announced its impressive 2017 line-up!

The five-day festival will take place from June 7 to 11 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood; the festival this year will screen 13 features, 22 shorts, and 15 documentaries from the US, France, UK, Germany Cyprus, and of course, Greece. In a new record for the program, 40 of the screened features will be premieres.

Festival head Aris Katopodis unveiled this year’s festival theme, stating, “this year, we carefully selected a program which embodies the 2016 Festival Theme of ‘Building Bridges’. Each title represents creating a bridge – whether it is between relationships, races or countries, and the problems and triumphs encountered in reaching the goal.”

The red carpet opening night on June 7 will be followed by a screening of Yannis Sakaridis’ award-winning “Amerika Square” (Plateia Amerikis), which focuses on three intertwined stories of racial relationships and tensions in modern-day Athens. After the opening night movie, attendees will be able to dine and dance in the Egyptian Theatre courtyard.

One of the featured films this year is GreekReporter’s documentary “The Greek”, which details the incredible story of one-armed Greek boxer Vaggelis ‘Cobra’ Chatzis, and the challenges he has overcome to get to where he is today in the boxing world.

“The Greek” screens on Thursday, June 8, at 4 PM.

The 2017 Orpheus Awards will be held, as usual, on the closing night of the festival on June 11; this year, the special honoree will be Alexander Payne.

Sponsors of the LA Greek Film Festival include Aegean Entertainment, Earth Friendly Products, The Onassis Foundation, G.P. Kolovos & Associates, and Medix. If you are in the LA area and want to purchase tickets, check out the official LAGFF site.
