Yorgos Lanthimos Wins Best Screenplay at 2017 Cannes Film Festival

Yorgos Lanthimos won the award for Best Screenplay on the final day of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, for his script for “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”, which he also directed.

The well-received film, which stars Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman as a successful surgeon and his wife who are thrown into somewhat surreal circumstances, made a splash at the festival. Kidman also won a Special 70th Anniversary Award at the festival this year.

This is Lanthimos’ third film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, after past entries like “Dogtooth”, which won an “Un Certain Regard” prize, and “The Lobster”, which won The Jury prize at Cannes.

English screenwriter Lynne Ramsay shared the Best Screenplay award for “You Were Never Really Here”. Ruben Östlund won the prestigious Palme d’Or for the Swedish film “The Square”, while the Jury Prize went to Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Loveless” and the Gran Prix was awarded to Robin Campillo for “120 Beats Per Minute”.
