Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, recently told Quartz that Netflix will release 1,000 original titles by the end of 2018.
The innovative head of Netflix had previously announced that 700 original titles would be released on the giant streaming service in 2018, but now Netflix looks as though it is ready to surpass that original projection.
With its frenzied production pace, Netflix projects that it will release another 470 series, films, documentaries, and other productions by the end of the year. Original content now accounts for 85% of new Netflix spending. The company also stated that more than 90% of its subscribers watch Netflix’s original content regularly.
Many major studios including Disney, CBS, Fox, and Universal have been pulling their series from the Netflix streaming service, which seems to have only increased Netflix’s drive to produce its own content. The other studios are starting to launch their own streaming services, which will compete directly with Netflix.
The business model of the streaming service has been questioned recently, as stockholders and subscribers wonder if Netflix has spread itself too thin or spent itself too much into debt with its focus on original productions. Others are also starting to question Netflix’s assessment of its shows’ success, as viewing numbers are not released.
However, the service now boasts over 109 million global subscribers, and that number is constantly increasing. So for the moment, it seems that Netflix is still surging ahead.
