The father of Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos died near Athens on Thursday, just a few days after his son’s movie ”The Favourite” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards.

Antonis Lanthimos, a former basketball player, was living in Porto Rafti, which is east of Athens.

During the 1960’s and ’70’s he played for his favorite club Pagrati. He also played for the Greek national basketball team.

The director’s father had openly expressed his admiration for his son’s films, saying that his favorite was ”Dogtooth”.

“Sometimes I watch his films, and I wonder where he gets his inspiration from,” the elder Lanthimos was quoted as saying.
