Marina Sirtis recently revealed that she was sexually molested when she was just three years old. The former “Star Trek” actress opened up about the effect the experience had on her life, and how she eventually tried to cope with it.
In an interview with Great Britain’s The Times, Sirtis spoke about the abuse she endured at the hands of a babysitter’s teenage sons.
She said, “I never told anyone because even at three you know it’s shameful and you think somehow it’s your fault. My mother never knew — it would have killed her.”
It took the actress years to come to terms with what had happened to her. At age 13, while living in London, she developed an eating disorder which lasted on and off for almost 20 years.
Sirtis credits the personal and group therapy she underwent in Los Angeles with helping her identify and cope with her trauma. Bonding and sharing stories with other victims of sexual abuse guided her through the healing process.
As to Sirtis’ decision to come out with the truth now, she says: “What happened to me was awful and I have never talked about it before in public, but I feel that there comes a time when I have to say something, and that time is today.”
