Mr. Rogers, as he was generally known, was known for his kind, open-hearted, compassionate disposition. His children’s show tried to educate new generations to be tolerant and open.
In general, there has been renewed focus on Fred Rogers’ life and work thanks to the recent documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” As a type of male America’s Sweetheart, Tom Hanks may indeed have been the perfect person to cast as the iconic Mr. Rogers.
“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” follows Matthew Rhys, who plays a cynical magazine writer as he sets about interviewing and doing a profile on Rogers. He goes on to have his cynicism somewhat taken apart as he discovers Rogers is just as authentic as most people believed him to be.
“We are trying to give the world positive ways of dealing with their feelings,” Hanks explains in the trailer, as Mr. Rogers.
The movie’s director is Marielle Heller, last known for helming the much darker “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, starring Melissa McCarthy.
