Greek-English actor Theo James, born Theodore Taptiklis, best known for his roles in blockbuster movies like “Divergent”, will make his musical theatre debut in London with “City of Angels”.

James became a breakout star thanks to the “Divergent” movie series opposite Shailene Woodley, and has also received acclaim for acting in notable TV shows such as “Sanditon”. Though he has previously performed on stage in London in “Sex with Strangers”, this will be his first musical role.

The handsome actor’s singing talents may come as a surprise to most people. As Josie Rourke, the director of “City of Angels” stated, “I knew Theo was a terrific actor, but I had no idea he was also in possession of such an exceptional singing voice”.

“City of Angels” is a musical comedy that pays tribute to the film noir genre. It focuses on two interwoven stories: the journey of a writer creating a screenplay, as well as the fictional world of the film he is creating. The musical won several Tony awards during its original Broadway run in 1990, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Performance by a Leading Actor.

In the London production taking place at the Garrick Theatre, James will appear alongside experienced stage actors including Jonathan Slinger, Rosalie Craig, and Hadley Fraser. “City of Angels” will start its run in 2020, with previews starting on March 5.
