In these challenging times, the 2021 Oscars will have to be produced differently than ever before. However, an award-winning team has come together to help put up the 93rd Academy Awards.
This team includes Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, Oscar-nominated producer Stacey Sher, and Emmy-nominated producer Jesse Collins. They will rise to the challenge of producing one of Hollywood’s biggest nights. Collins has previously produced high-profile awards shows, including the Grammy Awards and BET Awards.
Academy President David Rubin publicly said, “the upcoming Oscars is the perfect occasion for innovation and for re-envisioning the possibilities for the awards show. This is a dream team who will respond directly to these times”.
We don’t yet know what the 2021 Oscars may look like. After all, Soderbergh and crew must produce one of the most famous awards shows on earth during a global pandemic.
2021 Oscars Ceremony
The 2021 Academy Awards will air later than usual this year – Sunday, April 25, on ABC. Due to the later event date, the deadline for qualifying films has also been extended to February 28, 2021.
One Greek who has a good shot at an Oscar this year is famed composer Alexandre Desplat. The former Oscar winner composed the score for “Midnight Sky”, and is on many favorite lists for an Oscar nomination this year.
Greece’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category is Christos Nikou’s “Apples”.
Even if the Oscars are held virtually, the Academy wants a high-energy event rather than a low-key one. Additionally, it’s possible that COVID cases in LA will be low enough, or enough people will be vaccinated by then, for the event to be held in person.
However, LA is a viral hotspot at the moment, and vaccine rollout is much slower than expected. This means dreams of an in-person Oscar night may be dashed. After all, one of the ongoing problems with the pandemic is that making solid future plans or business decisions has been almost impossible.
We will be sharing any updates on Oscar news or from the Academy’s site. What do you think will happen?
